The Aga Khan Award for Architecture, established in 1977 by His Highness the Aga Khan, recognises examples of architectural excellence that encompass contemporary design, social housing, community improvement and development, restoration, re-use, and area conservation, as well as landscaping and environmental issues. Through its efforts, the Award seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of societies in which Muslims have a significant presence.

The selection process emphasises architecture that not only provides for people's physical, social, and economic needs, but that also stimulates and responds to their cultural and spiritual expectations. Particular attention is given to building schemes that use local resources and appropriate technology in an innovative way, and to projects likely to inspire similar efforts elsewhere.

The Award is organised on the basis of a calendar spanning a three-year cycle, and is governed by a Steering Committee chaired by the Aga Khan. (Members of the 2004 Award Steering Committee will be announced during the course of 2002.) Prizes totalling up to US$ 500,000 - the largest architectural award in the world - are presented every three years to projects selected by an independent Master Jury. The Award has completed eight cycles of activity since 1977, and documentation has been compiled on over 7,000 building projects located throughout the world. To date, the Master Juries have identified eighty-four projects to receive Awards. The Ninth Award Cycle covers the period from 2002 to 2004.

The first edition of Design 21 project was organized by UNESCO and Felissimo Group for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations and UNESCO. 50 laureates were selected and a Fashion Show of their models took place at the Carrousel du Louvre in March 1996. Several exhibitions were held in Paris, Geneva, New York, Beijing, Tokyo and Kobe. Design 21-I encountered a great success through a large media coverage.

Continuous Connection / Design 21 invites young designers from around the world to create and present a new vision for the way we live in this new century.
This is the fifth Design 21 International Design Award, co-organized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and Felissimo Group (Japan). The objective of this contest is to stimulate and promote creative force among the generations that would shape our future. It also encourages young designers to use design as part of a process of creating a new lifestyle and as a tool to improve the quality of self-expression and communication with others.
Entries were invited for everyday items for home, fashion, new high tech and low tech essentials of today's lifestyle, such as tools and gadgets including communications device, items for home office, travel goods, food, etc... The theme "LOVE / Why?" has been chosen to stimulate reflection on the need in the present world for design/concepts that provide a sense of connection, understanding and harmony - between persons, between people and everyday environment. It reflects an underlying objective of "Design 21" to create and maintain human connections through design.

This award has been preceded by an invitational exhibition by renowned professionals (referred to as "Part 1 Exhibition") in Barcelona, Spain, as part of the Universal Forum of Cultures 2004.

The DuPont Benedictus Awards program is an annual international competition for both student and professional architects to recognize significant and enterprising architectural uses of laminated glass.

SPONSORS: Major funding is provided by DuPont, and the competition is organized by The American Institute of Architects (AIA), with worldwide support of the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA). Head quartered in Washington, D.C. with chapters throughout the United States and in Europe and Asia, the AIA is a 59,000-member professional society representing the majority of the nation's architects. It was founded in 1857 and works in partnership with the non-profit American Architectural Foundation. The Paris based UIA, founded in 1948, is a federation of national architectural organizations in more than 100 countries from the five continents with more than 900,000 architects worldwide. DuPont is the producer of Butacite ®* polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer for laminated glass. SCOPE: Named after Edouard Benedictus, a French chemist who discovered the process for laminating glass, the award includes a student design category in addition to existing project recognition. PRIZES: The winning architects are presented with a glass sculpture designed by a renowned artist and/or cash prizes.

ENTRY: Contestants submit slides of projects and an evaluation written in English explaining why the design is unique and how laminated glass is incorporated into their project. Entries are judged by degree of innovation, breadth of application, importance of laminated glass to the building and concept, as well as significance or impact for industry and the consumer.

ELIGIBILITY: The professional program is an international competition open to all architects and industrial designers except members of the jury or their firms. The entry can also be a collaborative effort representing the work of individuals from several firms. The student competition is open to upper level students in ACSA member schools in North American, as well as Africa, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Europe and the Middle East.

Prizes 2004
The total prize money is 30,000 euros. It was solely up to the jury to decide the number and the size of the prizes within this overall frame. After the review of all submitted projects and closer scrutiny of 56 short-listed projects, the jury decided to give out ten prizes and thereby give a reasonable money prize for each winner.
- The first prize comprised 8,250 euros for the student and 2,000 euros for the teacher.
- The second prize comprised 6,250 euros for a team of three students, and 1,500 euros for the teacher.
- Eight honourable mentions were awarded 1,200 euros per project, and 300 euros for the teachers.

Apart from the money prizes, the winners were presented with an award trophy, especially designed as a three-dimensional "A" in hand-moulded glass, reflecting the characteristic logo of the International VELUX Award for Students of Architecture.
